What are you learning about the community you are working with? I am learning that elementary music is truly never a dull moment and that there are so many diverse activities you can do with them to engage in the music making process! I am really learning to tap into my creativity here.
How does learning look/feel different in this context? I am realizing that music class is not only a space to teach music, but also an opportunity to engage in conversations about building community, demonstrating good citizenship, nurturing positive attitudes, and collaborating.
What pedagogical approaches are you using? I am using the ideas of sequencing and chunking regularly. I always have the students do something physical as well as vocalise the concept before they play it on an instrument. I find that using movement and our voices really helps to build their understanding, musicianship, and lead to their overall success.
What challenges have you encountered? I try to end every class on a positive note, even if students have presented certain challenging behaviours. I think as a teacher, you need to have unconditional support for your students. It isn't that you don't like the student, but instead the behaviour.
What have you learned from this experience? I am learning to slow/break things down, build connections with the students, and demonstrate compassion and understanding. Elementary students really look up to the adults in their lives, and I have noticed that they have been very attentive toward me, so I plan on continuing to set a positive example and be an encouraging role model for them.
How do you feel about this experience? I am really enjoying the elementary setting! On top of my music classes, I have had the opportunity to sit in on some of the French classes as they present their plays. I'm learning lots about the AIM Language program. I've even signed up for a 2-day virtual teacher training through AIM and am looking for summer Orff courses and workshops to supplement my teaching and learning. Elementary teaching is growing on me, and I have already witnessed so much growth in only 8 days with the students! I'm excited to keep trying out various methodologies, approaches and strategies with my students!
My biggest takeaway has been that patience, understanding, and structure are very important to practice and model for elementary students. Once you develop a routine for your students, set expectations and boundaries, it becomes much easier and effective to make music together. By doing so, we can all leave each day of teaching and learning with a sense of joy and accomplishment and to me that is the best feeling that a teacher could ask for!
